Abstract

Heart rate is such a prominent parameter in health, therefore, it is very important to know a patient’s heart rate to diagnose the condition of the patient at the time. This study aimed to design a system of heart rate detection and the notification via SMS by using Arduino Nano Microcontroller and SMS Gateway. The heart rate sensors use KY-039 with phototransistor technology. Heart rate sensors and the other electronic components are coupled and connected to the Arduino according to the corresponding PIN. After that, a program that serves to detect heart rate is developed. The heart rate is detected based on the significant changes in blood flow which is monitored through the heart rate sensors. The difference is monitored by observing the changes in the intensity of infrared received by the phototransistor on the heart rate sensor. The results are proceeded and converted into Beat per Minute (BPM). Arduino microcontroller does the processing and if the heart rate is in a certain condition, it will send a message to the modem in order to send SMS to the registered number. The testing system is performed by matching the heart rate detection device generated with other heart rate detector and also testing the messages’ delivery performance to the registered number.
