Abstract

The aim of this study is to describe the type of ambiguities and their impact to the reader of mass media. Mass media contains the news read by every people, therefore the precision to write the news is needed. However, the diction from journalists sometimes creates the ambiguity which is able to make the reader cannot understand the news titles well. The research method used in this study is descriptive qualitative. The primary data are the documents of the ambiguity of news titles in mass media. The secondary data are taken from the interview to the reader about their understanding toward the ambiguity news titles. The types of ambiguity found in this research are lexical and grammatical ambiguity. The types of lexical ambiguity are homonymy, polysemy, and antonym. Then, grammatical ambiguities are caused by the lack of subject and the use of inappropriate punctuation. The implication of those ambiguities have impact to the reader that around 20% educated respondents and 90% uneducated respondents cannot understand the title well.
