It is difficult for new researchers to be able to produce academic articles that will be accepted for publication. The process requires an understanding of the way a journal editor and peer reviewers assess a submitted article for publication and the way an article can be composed to meet their exacting standards. This paper explores the processes of writing and publication within the context of the control and management of the accumulation of the body of knowledge (or the literature) by academic publishers – those august scholars who together make up the academy. It responds to the question: how can an inexperienced researcher improve their chances of having an article accepted for publication in a high quality English language based peer reviewed journal? It suggests a number of strategies to enhance not only the writing of the paper in an acceptable way but also the design and appropriateness of the research itself.
